Walter Dean Myers passes away at 76

Walter Dean Myers, in his own words and what he hoped his legacy would be.

“I hope that my legacy is that I was useful for young people…”

“…I want to make people of color human beings, and I want to make poor people human beings. I want to include them in my books so that they can look at my books and say that could be me, and this guy understands who I am as a poor person.”

  1. I am at a loss for words. Walter Dean Myers was one of my favorite children’s authors. I am fortunate to have several of his books, which he graciously signed for me in the 1990s at a Bay Area book talk. My daughters were privilege to meet him as well. We are all so sad, but blessed to know that his legacy will live on. Indeed, we have lost a gentle giant who humanized the poor and the troubled. What a fine example of a man to mirror. My condolences to his family.
