FAQ

What is The Brown Bookshelf?

A group of authors and illustrators who came together to push awareness of the myriad of African American voices writing for young readers.

What is 28 Days Later?

28 Days Later is the flagship initiative of The Brown Bookshelf. It is a month-long showcase of the best in Picture Books, Middle Grade and Young Adult novels written and illustrated by African Americans to help parents, teachers, librarians and booksellers recommend good reads.

How will the 28 Days Later authors and illustrators be selected?

Through a multi-tier selection process. Public submissions will be accepted at The Brown Bookshelf during a designated time period in the fall . Authors may self-submit for consideration. Author and Illustrator names will also be solicited from publishers, librarians, teachers and other children’s literature industry professionals. Members of The Brown Bookshelf team will also internally nominate candidates.

How are nominations submitted?

Please submit nominations in the comment section of the relevant blog post soliciting names.

When will you announce the individuals selected?

Authors and illustrators selected for our upcoming campaign will be notified via email in December or January. Starting February 1st, the selected authors/illustrators  and their work will be highlighted at The Brown Bookshelf website.

How many slots are available for the open submissions?

This is at the discretion of The Brown Bookshelf.

Will you notify authors  if they are not selected for 28 Days Later?

Authors and illustrators will only be notified if they have been selected for the upcoming campaign.

Can The Brown Bookshelf review my book?

At this time, the only books that members of The Brown Bookshelf review are for the 28 Days Later initiative.  The members are not book reviewers and BBS does not accept unsolicited requests for book reviews or inclusion in the 28 Days Later campaign.
