Day 27: Asia Simone

Asia Simone received her BFA in Illustration and a minor in creative writing from the University of the Arts. She’s a digital artist whose love for animation and comics/manga is evident in her work, including her graphic novel release, Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur: Wreck and Roll. Her goal is always to draw whimsically expressive characters and create stories and worlds that feel magical, whether contemporary or not.

Her love for character acting is evident in her work on interior projects, Adventure Time: Best Of Buds Issue 2, and My Little Pony: Tournament Of Mysteries. She uses vibrant colors, shapes, and light to express fantasy in reality and to showcase positive representations of underrepresented people and stories. With two books to her name, she continues to develop her sense of storytelling through personal comics and characters she creates.

How I work:
My process is broken down into clear categories that I follow without fail for everything I do!
    1) Thumbnails- Rough sketches/layout
    2) Sketches- Tight final sketches
    3) Inks- Outlines
    4) Colors
When I’m sketching I sketch every layer of my drawings in different colors. From the skeleton to the final anatomy, clothes, and hair, all of those are separated into different color sketches layered on top of each other so that they can be edited easily.
The most fluid part of my process is my coloring which I believe stands out the most in my work. I do pick base colors to use as flats but when it comes to the layering of the multicolor palettes that I often use, I will often pick random colors or use intuition to pick colors to layer on top of each other using adjustment layers, allowing the colors to interact and play with each other often leading to outcomes I’m not even sure of until I see the results!
